The European Commission calls for the abolition of border controls within the European Union: what are the arguments?
6 June 16:10
The European Commission is insisting on the phased abolition of national border controls in European countries. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.
“From the European Commission’s perspective, the gradual phasing out of border controls in the nine member states where they are currently in place is both possible and appropriate, particularly in Germany,” said EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner in an interview.
He made this statement a week before the European asylum reform came into effect.

Brunner’s Arguments
To justify his call, Brunner cited a “sharp” decline in the number of asylum applications, as well as the fact that the measures taken—external border security and the EU-wide entry and exit system—are yielding results.
In the Schengen Area, freedom of movement generally applies without regular border controls, but a number of countries, including Germany, are currently conducting temporary checks.
Enhanced border controls in Germany
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt introduced enhanced controls at German borders in the spring of 2025, immediately after the “black-red” federal government—composed of members of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD)—took office.
The European asylum reform takes effect on June 12. It aims to reduce the number of people seeking asylum in the EU and introduces numerous stricter measures for asylum seekers, including in Germany.
