Europe isn’t just reducing its dependence on Russian energy resources—it’s moving faster than planned. This is evidenced by the inclusion of liquefied natural gas in the 20th sanctions package.

Economist Andriy Novak discussed this in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to him, as early as 2026, the EU will completely stop purchasing Russian energy resources delivered by sea. In 2027, it will completely phase out both pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas. The schedule has been adopted and is being implemented. And, according to the expert’s forecast, it will be completed ahead of schedule.

“This is the timeline that Europe has adopted; it is following it and, I am confident, will even exceed it—that is, move faster,” Novak emphasized.

He also noted that including liquefied natural gas in the sanctions is not a one-off measure, but part of the European Union’s systematic plan to completely cut Russia off from the European energy market.
