Ukraine’s gas reserves have exceeded the target: Will there be enough natural gas for the winter?

The need for an additional 400 million euros for gas imports, as stated by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, is only the minimum amount required. Ukraine’s actual need for funds to purchase gas may turn out to be significantly higher, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing RBC-Ukraine.
The €400 million would allow for the purchase of approximately 700–800 million cubic meters of gas at current prices.
“In reality, much more gas will need to be imported. What Shmyhal announced is the minimum amount needed to purchase gas,” said a source familiar with the preparations of the energy system for winter, as quoted by the publication.
The additional gas volumes are needed not for injection into storage facilities, but for supplying gas directly to consumers, in case gas production declines this winter due to shelling and gas withdrawals from storage facilities are restricted.
At the same time, the situation with gas reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities currently looks better than expected. As of August 12, nearly 14 billion cubic meters of gas had been accumulated in UGS facilities, which already exceeds the government’s minimum target of 13.2 billion cubic meters ahead of the start of the heating season.
