Nuclear power generation is on the rise: “Energoatom” has brought another unit online ahead of schedule

As part of preparations for the upcoming heating season, a maintenance campaign is underway at nuclear power plants in Ukraine. On August 21, the joint-stock company “National Nuclear Energy Generating Company ‘Energoatom’” reported that the sixth of nine power units located in territory controlled by Ukraine has already been successfully connected to the country’s power grid. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a post by Energoatom on social media.

Thanks to the completion of scheduled preventive maintenance, the reactor is fully ready to operate at maximum capacity during the fall and winter.

According to Energoatom, the work schedule was optimized thanks to careful planning and the coordinated efforts of the maintenance crews. As a result, the company will be able to generate an additional 210 million kWh of electricity.

“The early reconnection of the power unit to the grid is the result of the effective work of the repair crews and the entire NAEK team. Throughout the state of martial law, our goal remains unchanged—to have every possible megawatt available to ensure the country’s electricity supply during the coldest time of the year,” said Pavlo Kovtonyuk, head of Energoatom.

Support for the Subsidized Rate for Households

In addition to power generation, NAEK “Energoatom” reports that it continues to fulfill its social function by helping the state maintain a fixed electricity rate for residential consumers.

In the first seven months of 2026, the company transferred 141 billion 448 million hryvnias (including VAT) for the PSO (public service obligation) service. This allows the company to cover the difference between the market cost of electricity and the residential tariff specifically through revenues from nuclear power generation.

We would also like to remind you that on August 21, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal stated during Question Time with the Government in the Verkhovna Rada that Ukraine is not currently implementing planned power outages and that the power grid is operating stably—however, the situation may change depending on the intensity of Russian attacks on the energy sector.
