Poland is well aware that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will pose a serious economic challenge for it—and this, according to economist Andriy Novak, is one of the underlying causes of tension in Polish-Ukrainian relations. He spoke about this on the "Komersant Ukrainian" YouTube channel
According to him, Ukraine’s full membership in the EU would automatically eliminate all the quotas under which Ukraine currently sells its products to the European market. From that point on, Ukrainian producers would operate on an equal footing with all member states—including Poland.
“There’s no doubt that Warsaw understands that Ukraine isn’t just a serious competitor—it’s a devastating competitor. As soon as Ukraine gains full EU membership—which, in economic terms, means that all quotas under which we currently sell our products to the European market will be automatically lifted— that is, we will be on an equal footing with all producers and traders from all EU member states, including Poland,” he noted.
According to the economist, there is only one solution: Poland must seek cooperation and joint ventures with Ukrainian businesses—otherwise, Ukrainian companies will simply drive out Polish competitors on their own or in partnership with other countries.
As a reminder, Polish President Karol Nawrocki recently stated that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union could pose a threat to the Polish agricultural sector. He emphasized that, while he understands Ukraine’s aspirations for European integration, he considers it his duty to protect Poland’s domestic market.
According to him, Poland must protect its own market and domestic products. Nawrocki assured farmers that, as head of state, he would consistently defend the interests of Polish farmers.
He also noted that while he understands Kyiv’s aspirations for European integration, he considers it his direct duty to protect Polish producers.
It should be noted that Ukraine has begun the practical phase of preparation for membership in the European Union. As part of the agricultural sector, the domestic agro-industrial complex must prepare to operate under the strict rules of the single European market. This will open up access for Ukraine to 440 million new consumers, but will require meeting 16 specific indicators.
