DeepL no longer speaks Russian: popular translator stops working in Russia and Belarus

18 June 2025 22:16

The online translator DeepL, known for its high translation accuracy thanks to artificial intelligence, has stopped working in Russia and Belarus, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".

Users from these countries can no longer use the service – a message appears instead of the translation: “This service is not available in your region”. The mobile application is also unavailable.

The company DeepL, founded in 2017 in Germany by Polish entrepreneur Jaroslaw Kutylowski, has not yet provided an official explanation for the access blocking.

It is known that the company’s value exceeds $1 billion, and its services have been used by more than 500 million people worldwide. Investors include Atomico, Bessemer Venture Partners, and IVP.

After the outbreak of full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022, DeepL added Ukrainian to its service, which quickly became one of the most popular languages among users. The company then accelerated its integration, emphasizing its support for Ukraine.

The decision to cease operations in Russia and Belarus is in line with the general trend of international IT companies to wind down their presence in the markets of aggressor countries.
