Drones attacked Russia’s largest oil refinery from the north: what are the consequences?

26 April 04:01

On the night of April 26, drones attacked the Yaroslavl Oil Refinery—one of the largest facilities in Russia’s oil refining industry. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing OSINT sources.

Strike on the Refinery

According to eyewitnesses, the attack began around 12:40 a.m. local time. The sound of drones could be heard in the sky above the city, followed by a series of powerful explosions—at least 15.

The force of the explosions shook windows in homes and set off alarms in parked cars.

A “drone hazard” warning was issued in the region prior to the attack. Due to the threat of strikes, Yaroslavl Airport temporarily suspended flight arrivals and departures.

The Ukrainian monitoring resource Exilenova confirmed that the target of the drones was the Yaroslavl Oil Refinery (full name: “Slavneft-Yaroslavnefteorgsintez,” also known as “Slavneft-YANOS”). A massive fire broke out on its grounds following the strikes.

Significance of the Facility

The Yaroslavl Oil Refinery is the largest oil refinery in northern Russia and ranks among the country’s top five refineries in terms of crude oil processing capacity.

Its capacity is approximately 15 million tons of crude oil per year. The facility produces gasoline, diesel fuel, and jet fuel, which is critically important for the logistics of the Russian army.

Attacks on Russian Oil Infrastructure

The Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to systematically strike Russian oil infrastructure. In late March and early April 2026, oil refineries in Kirishi, Yaroslavl, Saratov, Ufa, and Novokuybyshevsk, as well as terminals in Primorsk, Ust-Luga, and Tuapse, came under attack.

On April 21, SBU drones attacked the Samara production control station, damaging five oil storage tanks. On the night of April 22, drones struck the Syzran Oil Refinery.

The fire at the Tuapse oil refinery is still burning—it has been going on for five days now. In addition, the Nikolskoye oil pumping station in the Tambov region was recently targeted.
