Beef exports from Ukraine have surged: what’s behind the spike
16 April 14:57
In March 2026, Ukraine saw a sharp increase in fresh beef exports. This was reported by the Milk Producers Association, citing data from the State Customs Service, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to the Milk Producers Association, exports totaled 467.2 tons, which is 102% more than in February, with revenue reaching $3.69 million (118%).
Trends since the beginning of the year
January–March 2026:
- exports of fresh beef — 991 tons,
- revenue — $7.61 million.
Compared to the same period in 2025:
- volumes increased nearly 23-fold.
Frozen beef: more stable growth
Exports of frozen beef also show positive growth, but at a more moderate pace.
In March:
- 1,670 metric tons (31% increase from February, 10% increase from March 2025),
- revenue — $7.37 million (27% and 31%, respectively).
For the first quarter:
- 3,910 metric tons (–8%),
- $17.8 million (13%).
This indicates that prices are rising faster than volumes.
Why are exports growing?
The key factor is the situation on the global market.
Ukraine is increasing its cattle exports amid high global prices and limited livestock supply.
Global context: supply shortages and demand
USA
According to Beef Magazine:
- beef prices remain high,
- livestock numbers are low,
- and production is not increasing.
At the same time:
- exports from the U.S. are weakening due to restrictions imposed by China,
- domestic demand is still supporting the market.
Brazil
According to Brasilagro:
- cattle prices have reached historic highs,
- export demand is high, especially from China,
- supply is limited by a shortage of animals.
There is a risk
- export quotas will be reached in the near future.
New markets: the United Kingdom
Ukraine is also working to expand its export markets.
In particular, an audit by DEFRA is currently underway. The goal is to open the British market to Ukrainian beef.
What this means
The current situation creates a window of opportunity for Ukraine:
- a global shortage is driving up prices,
- competitors are facing restrictions,
- demand in foreign markets is growing.
At the same time:
- domestic production is also limited,
- further growth depends on the state of the livestock industry.
The sharp increase in beef exports in 2026 is the result of favorable conditions in the global market.
