Germany Imposes Restrictions on Gadgets: Ministry of Defense Steps Up Measures to Combat Espionage
16 April 19:42
The German Ministry of Defense has introduced new restrictions on the use of personal devices by its employees. This was reported by *Der Spiegel* , according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The decision is linked to growing espionage risks, particularly from Russia and China.
What exactly has been banned
According to the new directive, it is prohibited to bring smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches to meetings classified as “secret.”
This applies in particular to discussions regarding:
- military exercises,
- operations,
- combat readiness.
Before such meetings, employees must leave their devices in special lockers.
Where restrictions apply
The rules apply not only to meeting rooms.
The restrictions apply to offices containing classified documents, as well as a significant portion of the premises in the Bendlerblock complex.
Why this is important
The agency believes that:
- The Bundeswehr is a priority target for foreign intelligence services,
- espionage can be used not only to gather information but also to prepare sabotage operations.
Vulnerability of personal devices
Despite the availability of secure work phones, employees often use personal devices—in particular due to restrictions on popular services such as WhatsApp.
According to estimates by German security services:
- personal phones are easier to identify through apps,
- they are vulnerable to phishing attacks,
- and interference can go unnoticed for a long time.
As in other organizations
The Defense Ministry’s new rules are not the strictest.
By comparison: in Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, personal devices are completely banned, and in NATO, their use is strictly regulated.
What this means
Berlin’s decision reflects a broader trend in which digital devices are becoming a security vulnerability. Even allies are tightening internal controls, and espionage is increasingly shifting to the digital realm.
