Israeli troops kill 67 Palestinians during food distribution – Gaza Health Ministry

At least 67 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire in northern Gaza while waiting for UN trucks with humanitarian aid on Sunday. This was reported by the Ministry of Health of Gaza, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports with reference to Reuters.

The incident, according to doctors, occurred when thousands of starving civilians gathered around a convoy of the UN World Food Program with 25 trucks of food. According to Palestinian medics, dozens of people were also injured. This is one of the highest death tolls among many similar incidents in recent times.

The Israeli military said it fired warning shots into the crowd to eliminate the “immediate threat.” Army officials claimed that preliminary data indicate inflated casualty figures and that they “certainly did not deliberately target humanitarian aid trucks.”

The UN World Food Program confirmed that their convoy encountered “a huge crowd of starving civilians” who then came under fire. The organization emphasized that any violence against civilians seeking humanitarian aid is completely unacceptable.

In addition to the tragedy in northern Gaza, six more people were killed near another aid station in the south of the enclave. In total, health authorities reported 90 people killed by Israeli shelling and airstrikes across Gaza on Sunday.

The hunger situation is catastrophic

The hunger situation in Gaza has reached a critical point. Palestinian doctors warn that hundreds of people may soon die as hospitals are overwhelmed with patients suffering from dizziness and exhaustion due to lack of food. According to the Ministry of Health, 71 children have already died of malnutrition during the war.

The UN refugee agency UNRWA said it has enough food for the entire population of Gaza for more than three months, but Israel does not allow it to be imported. Gazans say that it has become impossible to find even basic foods such as flour, and food prices have risen to levels unaffordable for most people.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military has issued new evacuation orders for areas of central Gaza where hundreds of thousands of displaced people are hiding. Families of hostages have expressed concern that these actions could endanger the lives of their loved ones believed to be held in these areas.

A Hamas spokesman told Reuters that the growing casualties and famine crisis in the enclave could negatively affect the ongoing ceasefire talks in Qatar. Israel and Hamas are holding indirect talks in Doha aimed at reaching a 60-day truce and a hostage deal.

The war in Gaza has been going on for more than 21 months after the Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. According to Palestinian health authorities, the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Palestinians and displaced almost the entire population of the enclave.
