EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas stated that the U.S. Embassy had evacuated its diplomats amid Russian threats of attacks on Kyiv. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
Kallas made this statement during a conversation with journalists on May 28, responding to a question about whether Europeans were alarmed by Russia’s warnings to diplomats to leave Kyiv amid threats of strikes on the Ukrainian capital.
“This is what Russia is doing because it is essentially failing on the battlefield. That is why they are now intensifying terrorist attacks—you can’t call it anything else—and sowing fear in society. This hasn’t worked for years, and I don’t think it will work now,” Kallas said. “What we heard from Ukraine yesterday [May 27] is that all embassies have remained, except for one. This also speaks to the courage of the staff at these embassies. But yes, all Europeans are staying. America has left.”
At the same time, the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine stated that it continues to operate in Kyiv, and that reports of its departure are false.
“The U.S. Embassy is open. There have been no changes in our operations, and reports to the contrary are false. For the State Department, there is no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens, so we regularly review the security situation at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv,” the statement said.
The diplomatic mission emphasized that U.S. citizens should not travel to Ukraine “for any reason due to the armed conflict.”
Also, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhyi denied reports that the U.S. Embassy had left Kyiv due to threats from Russia to continue strikes on the Ukrainian capital.
