Watermelon prices in Ukraine continue to fall: what are the current prices?
15 August 10:18
Favorable weather conditions across virtually the entire country are allowing Ukrainian watermelon growers to continue harvesting at a brisk pace, which is leading to an increase in the supply of this product on the market, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
At the same time, according to farmers, the situation is further complicated by the fact that the majority of the supply consists of large-sized watermelons, for which demand remains weak. Wholesale companies and retail chains are cutting back on purchases of these watermelons to a minimum, citing extremely slow retail sales.
Currently, watermelon prices have already fallen to 2–10 UAH/kg ($0.04–0.22/kg), which is on average 34% cheaper than at the end of last week. Producers attribute the negative price trend to a sharp increase in the supply of this melon variety on the market. Due to the hot weather, the ripening rate of watermelons in the fields has accelerated significantly. At the same time, the drought currently affecting the southern regions of the country is negatively impacting product quality, further exacerbating the decline in prices.
It is worth noting that watermelons in Ukraine currently cost, on average, 47% less than during the same period last year. However, industry experts do not foresee a noticeable improvement in the market situation. According to them, only growers of high-quality watermelons will be able to raise prices, while the supply of such produce remains quite limited. At the same time, prices for watermelons weighing more than 5 kg will most likely continue to fall, as farmers will seek to accelerate sales and sell off their existing stock as quickly as possible.
