Despite statements made six years ago that it would keep production exclusively in Italy, Italian automaker Maserati is in talks with Chinese companies Huawei and JAC. This was reported by CnEVPost, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
“According to a report by Yunjian Insight, the automotive conglomerate Stellantis aims to leverage Chinese technology to jointly develop and manufacture vehicles powered by new energy sources,” the publication reports.
According to the plan, JAC will be responsible for research, development, and direct production of vehicles using key Huawei technologies, while Maserati will focus on design and branding.
“The models will be released in different versions: on the international market, they will retain the Maserati brand, while within China they will be sold under the local luxury brand Maextro, whose electric vehicles are over five meters long and cost from $100,000,” the publication reports.
Informal development is already underway, although a formal agreement has not yet been signed.
The reason for this move is the brand’s deep crisis. Maserati’s attempt to electrify its lineup on its own failed, and the company’s sales plummeted. While the brand sold 49,000 cars at its peak in 2017, this figure dropped by 57% to 11,300 units in 2024 and fell to 11,127 units in 2025.
Stellantis’s new CEO, Antonios Filos, is expected to reveal more detailed plans for Maserati’s future during Investor Day on May 21.

As a reminder, in 2024, Maserati sales fell by 57%, causing concern among analysts and company management. Factors contributing to the decline in sales include ineffective marketing strategies, changes in leadership, and a possible restructuring of the company. In an interview, the new CEO noted that the company remains unprofitable but expects to stabilize over the next two years. The possibility of selling the brand was previously considered, but company officials denied these rumors, stating that restructuring is planned and new solutions are being sought to overcome the crisis. However, strategic analysis is ongoing, and the company’s future largely depends on the decisions made by the new management.
Company representatives stated that the coming years will be decisive in determining the development strategy. Continuing restructuring, improving marketing strategies, and potential changes to the product lineup could play a key role in regaining market share. However, competition remains fierce, and success will depend on the speed and effectiveness of the measures taken.
In the first half of 2025, management presented an updated development plan intended to define the company’s future direction.
Maserati is an Italian company headquartered in Modena that specializes in producing comfortable sports cars with striking exteriors and high dynamic performance. It is part of Italy’s largest automotive corporation, Fiat Auto SpA.
