On Saturday, May 9, the new parliament held its first session in Hungary, during which Péter Mályi, leader of the winning party “Tisa,” was elected as the country’s new prime minister. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Telex and Clash Report.
A majority of the newly elected parliament voted in favor of Mádjar’s appointment as prime minister. There were 140 votes in favor and 54 against.
In addition, Ágnes Forsthofer, deputy chair of the Tisa party, was elected speaker of parliament. Her appointment was supported by 193 lawmakers, with 2 voting against.
Incidentally, one of the new speaker’s first decisions was to return the European Union flag to the parliament building. This happened for the first time in 12 years.
The media also note that Hungary’s former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was not present at the inaugural session.
It should be noted that following the election results, the “Tisa” party secured a constitutional majority in parliament (141 seats out of the 133 required and 199 possible).
Mátyás’s stance on Ukraine
As a reminder, Péter Magyar recently stated that the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine must be expanded. He made it clear that only under this condition would Budapest be ready to support the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
In addition, media reports noted that Magyar’s position largely echoes the demands previously voiced by Hungary’s former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Specifically, this referred to an 11-point list presented to Kyiv in 2024, which placed particular emphasis on the rights of the Hungarian community and the opportunity to receive education in the Hungarian language.
Péter Mádár also recently met with Berehove Mayor Zoltán Babiak. They discussed support for the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia and the possibility of restoring constructive relations between Ukraine and Hungary.
In addition, Magyar reported that he had proposed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that they meet in Berehove in June to discuss precisely these issues.
