It must return to Ukrainian control: Zelenskyy discussed the fate of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant with the IAEA Director General
26 April 20:19
On Sunday, April 26,Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. During the meeting, they discussed issues related to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, specifically the return of the facility to Ukrainian control. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the head of state’s Telegram channel.
“During the meeting… I emphasized the inadmissibility of formalizing and legalizing Russia’s presence at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant,” the president stated.
According to him, he and Grossi discussed temporary power outages at the plant’s units, reductions in their capacity, and the possible consequences of “these criminal actions.”
Zelenskyy also emphasized that for safe operation, the plant must return to the management of a licensed operator and Ukraine’s nuclear regulator.
“We agreed to continue IAEA missions to ensure continuous monitoring of the ZNPP’s condition. I am grateful to Rafael Grossi and the agency’s team for visiting our country on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster,” the head of state concluded.
The Situation Surrounding the ZNPP
The Zaporizhzhia NPP has been under occupation by Russian troops since March 2022. During this time, Russia has repeatedly attempted to grant its control over the facility a pseudo-legal status, disregarding the norms of international law.
As part of diplomatic efforts, the United States has proposed a joint management arrangement for the Zaporizhzhia NPP involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that such an approach is unfair and unacceptable.
Moscow insists that Ukraine and Russia should share the electricity generated by the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
