Major fire in the Chernobyl exclusion zone: the fire is spreading rapidly through the forest

8 May 08:58

Efforts to extinguish a large-scale forest fire are ongoing in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Due to strong gusts of wind, the fire is spreading rapidly across the area and engulfing new sections of the forest. The estimated area affected by the fire is already over 1,100 hectares. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

What is known about the fire in the Exclusion Zone

According to the State Emergency Service, the fire broke out in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in the north of the Kyiv region. As of the morning of May 8, rescue workers continue to fight the blaze, which has already engulfed a significant area of forest.

The fire is spreading due to difficult weather conditions. Strong gusts of wind are being recorded in the area of the fire, which are contributing to the rapid spread of the flames to new areas.

According to rescue workers, the estimated area of the fire exceeds 1,100 hectares.

Why firefighting is complicated

Several factors are complicating the situation in the Exclusion Zone:

  • dry weather;
  • strong winds;
  • a large fire area;
  • the danger of landmines in certain areas of the territory.

Due to the threat of explosive objects in some forest areas, rescue workers are temporarily unable to carry out firefighting operations. This significantly limits the ability to quickly contain the fire in certain areas.

What forces are involved in the response

Units of the State Emergency Service, specialized equipment, and personnel from other agencies are involved in fighting the large-scale fire.

Rescue workers are operating in an enhanced mode. The main tasks now are to localize the fire hotspots and prevent the fire from spreading further across the Exclusion Zone.

Firefighting operations are ongoing.

Why fires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone are particularly dangerous

Forest fires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone always attract heightened attention due to the special status of this territory. In addition to the environmental consequences and the risk of the fire spreading over large areas, the difficulty of accessing certain areas remains an additional problem.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion, some areas may be hazardous due to explosive ordnance. This is why rescue workers cannot always operate where the situation requires it.
