Consequences of the bad weather: Power outages reported in six regions of Ukraine

21 May 12:06

As of Thursday morning, due to severe weather conditions—including heavy rain and thunderstorms—more than 160 settlements in six regions—Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Dnipropetrovsk—have been left without power, either completely or partially. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the National Energy Company “Ukrenergo.

“Repair crews from regional power companies are already working to restore the networks damaged by the storm,” the report states.

Meanwhile, as a result of drone attacks on power facilities and artillery shelling of frontline regions, consumers in Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions are without power as of this morning. Emergency repair work is underway where security conditions currently permit.

According to Ukrenergo, electricity consumption is trending downward: as of 9:30 a.m. on May 21, it was 2.9% lower than at the same time the previous day—Wednesday.

“The reason is clear weather in most regions (except for the western regions). This enables the efficient operation of residential solar power plants and a corresponding reduction in energy consumption from the main grid,” the system operator explained.

The company has traditionally asked consumers to use electricity sparingly and not to turn on several high-power electrical appliances at the same time in the evening—from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
