Germany to Transfer the “Nord Stream” Power Plant to Ukraine: Details
5 May 09:38
Germany plans to transfer a gas-fired combined-cycle power plant to Ukraine, which previously supported the operation of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. This was reported by the newspaper *Die Welt*, citing the German company Sefe Securing Energy for Europe (formerly Gazprom Germania), according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
“The facility in question is located in Lubmin near Greifswald and is owned by Industriekraftwerk Greifswald GmbH (IKG). The plant was used to generate process heat during the delivery of Russian gas to the German gas transmission network,” the newspaper reports.
According to the NDR television channel, the plant has a capacity of 84 MW of heat and electricity.

In the summer of 2022, Russia reduced and subsequently completely halted gas supplies via the Nord Stream pipeline. This pipeline—like Nord Stream 2, which was never commissioned due to the invasion of Ukraine—soon sustained serious damage as a result of explosions. In addition, due to the war in Ukraine, Germany announced it would stop importing Russian gas.
Sefe: Operation of the station became unprofitable
According to Sefe, the majority owner of IKG, the plant’s operation became unprofitable after Russian gas supplies via the Baltic Sea ceased in September 2022. Since there are no other heat consumers for the facility, the plant’s operations were completely shut down in 2023.
The company also said it was unable to find a buyer for the thermal power plant.
“Therefore, as part of humanitarian aid, the plant will be transferred to a Ukrainian power plant operator on a self-pickup basis,” Sefe stated.
They noted that this decision is economically sound for the company, as it avoids the costs of dismantling or disposing of the equipment.
“At the same time, this agreement contributes to supporting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,” the company added.
