UN: The highest number of civilian Ukrainian casualties in July was recorded in Kyiv

The number of civilian casualties in Ukraine in July of this year was the highest since May 2022, while the number of child casualties was the highest since April 2022. These tragic statistics were released by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine on Thursday, August 13, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.
According to these figures, in July 2026, Russia’s war against Ukraine claimed the lives of 437 civilians, while another 2,610 civilians were injured. This is 30% higher than the figures for June 2026 (298 civilian fatalities, 2,041 wounded) and 70% higher than in July 2025 (312 fatalities, 1,482 wounded).
The main cause of civilian deaths: strikes by long-range weapons
Long-range weapons (missiles and drones) remain the leading cause of civilian deaths. In July of this year, 183 people were killed and 967 were wounded in Ukraine as a result of such attacks. This accounts for 38% of the total civilian casualties in Ukraine in July, according to UN estimates. The highest number of deaths caused by Russian strikes on Ukraine using long-range weapons was recorded in urban centers—far from the front lines.
The number of civilian casualties from airstrikes (105 killed, 753 wounded) increased by 143% compared to June 2026 (45 killed, 308 wounded), with aerial bombs becoming the second leading cause of death.
As for civilian deaths resulting from Russia’s use of short-range drones near the front lines, the number of such casualties in July 2026 reached its highest level since the start of Russia’s full-scale armed invasion of Ukraine (since February 24, 2022): 111 civilians killed and 710 wounded.
The highest number of civilian fatalities was recorded in Kyiv
Civilian deaths and injuries were recorded in July in 14 regions of Ukraine and the capital, Kyiv. The highest number of deaths and injuries occurred in Kyiv (54 killed, 202 injured), Kherson (34 killed, 424 injured), Zaporizhzhia (27 killed, 280 injured), and Sumy (20 killed, 152 injured).
In the territories of Ukraine currently under Russian occupation, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine was able to confirm the deaths of 25 civilians and injuries to 50 others. As access to information on civilian casualties in the occupied territories becomes increasingly limited, it has become more difficult to verify such data. Mission staff believe that the actual number of civilian casualties and injuries in these territories is significantly higher.
