“There may be fewer power outages in Ukraine following integration with the EU,” said Gerus

The integration of Ukraine’s and the European Union’s energy markets should help reduce the risk of power outages in the event of a generation shortfall. This was stated by Andriy Gerus, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Housing and Utilities Services, in an interview with the Verkhovna Rada press service, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to him, after the launch of the market coupling mechanism (a mechanism for integrating national markets into a single space — ed.) Ukraine will become part of the large European energy market, which will simplify electricity import procedures.
“We are becoming part of the large European market: the import procedure is being simplified—we will import more. Accordingly, electricity shortages will be smaller,” Gerus noted.
He emphasized that if there are problems with domestic generation, Ukraine will be able to cover the shortfall more quickly through imports.

“In the event of generation problems, we will have fewer blackouts, since part of the electricity for end consumers can be provided through imports from the EU,” the committee chairman explained.
According to Gerus, currently, electricity imports require going through auction procedures and finding counterparties, which can take several days.
After market integration, the necessary volumes of electricity will be available as early as the next day.
