Half a billion active users: Meta’s Threads sets a new popularity record

16 June 21:53

Meta, the company that owns the social network Threads, announced on June 16 that its platform, launched in 2023, has reached 500 million monthly active users.

This was reported by Bloomberg , as cited by "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to Threads CEO Connor Hayes, the number of daily active users has also increased compared to last year.

Although he did not provide specific figures, these data contradict some analysts’ estimates, who believed that the service’s audience was shrinking.

Competition with Twitter

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched Threads as a competitor to Twitter (now X), hoping to attract a portion of its long-standing audience. His goal was for Threads to eventually reach one billion users.

Threads has evolved from a service that avoided political discussions to a platform that strives to be relevant in a cultural context. This means that political topics may be important to a portion of its audience.

Connor Hayes noted:

“Ultimately, users should leave the app feeling good because they’ve become more informed.”

The elections in Taiwan served as an example of when Threads’ popularity surged dramatically. Furthermore, further audience growth depends largely on the presence of well-known personalities. There are already quite a few celebrities among active users, including director Spike Lee. NBA superstar LeBron James remains one of the most sought-after users.

Interaction with Other Meta Apps

Initially, Threads’ audience grew thanks to integration with Instagram, where users often came across Threads posts. But now, according to Gaze, more and more people are accessing Threads directly, which demonstrates its independence as a platform.

Threads’ popularity in South Korea has grown by over 80%, which helped attract the Korean pop group BTS. Their official account gained over 4.2 million followers in just a few days.

Threads has made it easier for users to share posts to their Instagram Stories, which is driving its continued growth in popularity.
