“A constitutional majority is needed”: Gorokhovsky may renege on his promise to fund the Hogo coffee shop in Podil

28 May 14:51

Monobank co-founder Oleg Gorokhovsky launched a poll among his followers to decide the fate of the promised financial aid for the Kyiv coffee shop Hogo, which was damaged by Russian shelling on the night of May 24. The businessman announced this on social media, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

The reason for the entrepreneur’s possible refusal to fund the restoration of this destroyed small business was the reaction of Ukrainians on social media and the successful crowdfunding campaign launched by the owners of the affected establishment themselves.

“I see many calls not to send aid to the owners of the Hogo café, which was damaged by shelling on the night of Saturday into Sunday, but to send donations to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In addition, the café owners have raised a large sum in a bank account, which will likely be enough for the restoration. On the other hand, I gave them my word to help,” Gorokhovsky reflects.

The businessman emphasized that a “constitutional majority” of 75% of poll participants’ votes is required to cancel or change his previous decision.

On his page, he launched a poll: to help the owners or make a donation of 1 million UAH to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As of this writing, 80% of Ukrainians have voted for the donation to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As a reminder, this coffee shop in Kyiv’s Podil district officially opened the day before the shelling. On the night of May 24, the building was damaged by a Russian attack. Despite the shattered windows and the destruction of the facade, the owner was already serving free coffee to Kyiv residents and rescue workers through the broken windows that very morning.

Oleg Gorokhovsky responded to this small business’s volunteer effort and publicly promised to fully cover the cost of restoring the establishment.

At the same time, the story gained widespread attention on social media and in the media, and the café owners set up their own “fund” for donations. This sparked a debate online: some users called for large business donations to be redirected directly to the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, since funds for the café’s repairs had already effectively been raised by citizens.

Voting on Gorokhovsky’s pages is currently underway. If the audience reaches the required 75%, the format of the aid or its allocation will be reconsidered.

Voting will last for 24 hours.
