Sweden has put an end to the Caffa case: the vessel will be handed over to Ukraine

The Swedish Supreme Court has issued a final ruling ordering the transfer to Ukraine of the confiscated vessel Caffa, which is subject to sanctions and which, according to the Ukrainian side, may have been used to illegally export Ukrainian goods from the temporarily occupied territories.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Vladislav Vlasyuk, the President of Ukraine’s representative on sanctions policy.
The Swedish Supreme Court has put an end to the Caffa case
According to Vladislav Vlasyuk, the Supreme Court’s decision is final.
“The Swedish Supreme Court has definitively returned the confiscated, sanctioned vessel ‘Caffa’ to Ukraine. The U.S. has also imposed some sanctions against the Russian Federation’s ground forces, missile and artillery command, and several other entities. But that sanctions regime applies to Iran and North Korea, not Russia,” he saidin a brief comment on the Swedish court’s decision.
Thus, all legal procedures regarding the transfer of the vessel to Ukraine have been completed.

Why the Caffa Was Subject to Sanctions
According to Ukrainian law enforcement officials, the Caffa systematically violated the rules for entering and leaving Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territory.
To conceal its activities, the vessel used a scheme involving false registration. In international databases, it was listed under the designation “Guinea False.”
According to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the vessel may have been involved in the illegal export of Ukrainian grain from the temporarily occupied territories.
Specifically:
- in July 2025, the Caffa called at the port of Sevastopol;
- afterward, the cargo was delivered to the Syrian port of Tartus.
It was precisely due to these circumstances that Ukraine imposed sanctions against the vessel on November 25, 2025.
This is the first such case of international cooperation
Back on June 4, Swedish authorities seized the Caffa.
This marked the first time a foreign court had granted a request from the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office for international legal assistance and agreed to seize a vessel that could have been used to illegally export Ukrainian goods from the temporarily occupied territories.
Subsequently, a court in Sweden ruled to transfer the vessel to Ukrainian law enforcement agencies, and now the country’s Supreme Court has definitively confirmed the legality of that decision.
