Petition to end the deduction of child support from combat pay rejected again
11 May 12:15
A petition on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine calling for the abolition of child support deductions from military personnel’s combat pay did not receive the number of votes required for consideration, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Interfax-Ukraine.
The petition was submitted on February 10, and as of May 11, it had garnered only 87 votes out of the 25,000 required.
“The changes made must be repealed and revised on the principles of conscience, justice, and equality of both parents. One compromise option is to not deduct child support from the compensation for military personnel’s direct participation in combat operations (the so-called ‘combat’ 100,000 UAH). When soldiers return from the war alive, unharmed, and healthy, they will spend the money they were able to save themselves to spend time with their children. At the same time, military personnel are not shirking their parental responsibilities—child support continues to be deducted from the soldier’s base pay,” the petition stated.
The author of the petition noted that children of military personnel with combatant status currently receive benefits for food and education, which reduces the financial burden on their former wives.
