Today, August 15, Daria Alyoshkina, who created vytynanky and promoted this art form around the world, passed away. Her works were featured in exhibitions in 22 countries. She was 44 years old. The news was announced on Facebook by the artist’s husband, musician Gordii Starukh, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
“Today (August 15), my beloved wife, the mother of my three children, and a world-class artist suddenly passed away,” wrote Gordii Starukh.
Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, reacted to Daria Alyoshkina’s death:
“The Lviv region and our entire country have lost an extraordinarily talented artist who, through her work, combined Ukrainian tradition with contemporary art. Her vytynanky are known far beyond Ukraine’s borders. They bring to life our culture, memory, symbols, and beauty—which Daria knew how to see and convey to others. Her works help people in different countries discover the richness of our culture.”
Hordii Starukh promised to provide details later regarding the time and place of Daria Alyoshkina’s funeral service and burial.
What Is Known About Daria Alyoshkina
Daria Alyoshkina was born in Kyiv to Ukrainian sculptors Oleksa and Lyudmyla Alyoshkin. However, she spent her childhood in the Vinnytsia region, in the village of Bukatynka in the Mohyliv-Podilskyi district. She received her education at the Lviv National Academy of Arts, majoring in monumental and decorative sculpture.
Daria Alyoshkina is known for reviving and popularizing the ancient Ukrainian craft of vytynanka. The artist created openwork panels measuring up to 5 meters. Her works have been featured in exhibitions in Poland, Germany, France, South Korea, Canada, the United States, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Denmark, and other countries.
Daria Alyoshkina’s works adorned the UN headquarters in Switzerland. She also collaborated with the jewelry brand “Cartier” and French interior designer Isabelle Daeron.
