No power—no trams either: Kyiv has suspended electric transit on the right bank due to Russian attacks

13 January 17:05

In Kyiv, tram and trolleybus service on the city’s right bank has been temporarily suspended. The reason is the aftermath of the latest Russian shelling and the critical situation in the power grid, which has led to emergency power outages in the capital.

This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Following overnight shelling, emergency power outages were implemented in the city. Under these conditions, trams and trolleybuses cannot operate reliably, so their service on the right bank of Kyiv has been suspended.

“Buses are being deployed on alternate routes to replace ground-based electric transport,” the Kyiv City State Administration reported.

How transportation is operating now

To maintain transport connections, the city has organized backup bus routes. According to the Kyivpastrans municipal enterprise, buses have replaced trams and trolleybuses on 41 routes.

Bus service has been introduced, in particular, to replace trolleybuses on routes from the Minsky residential area, Svobody Avenue, the Botanical Garden, the Palace of Sports, Lukyanivska, Nyvky, Sviatoshyn, Vydubychi, and other city districts. Buses are also running in place of trams in Borshchahivka, Podil, Kontraktova Square, Vidradny Avenue, and in the direction of Pushcha-Vodytsia.

Kyivpastrans notes that detailed route maps and schedules for the replacement routes are available on the company’s official website and on the “Traffic Changes” Telegram channel.

When will trams and trolleybuses return?

City authorities emphasize: the resumption of ground electric transport is possible only after the power grid stabilizes. The return of trams and trolleybuses will take place in stages, depending on the power situation.

The suspension of electric transport was yet another consequence of massive attacks on energy infrastructure. As of the morning of January 13, power outages affect not only Kyiv but also the Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Chernihiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions.

In the capital, about 500 buildings remain without heat, and some supermarkets in Kyiv and the region have temporarily suspended operations due to power outages.

City authorities are urging Kyiv residents to follow official announcements and be prepared for changes in public transportation operations while the power grid remains under pressure due to enemy attacks.
