Onion prices have risen for the first time in two months: how experts explain the increase

30 April 17:00

For the first time since early February of this year, Ukrainian producers have been able to raise their selling prices for onions. This information comes from the EastFruit analytical platform, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

It is noted that, in general, no significant price increases for this product have been recorded in Ukraine since mid-May 2025.

Key market participants attribute the current price increase to the seasonal depletion of onion stocks at local farms, as well as to increased purchasing activity by wholesale companies.

“According to the project’s monitoring data, as of today, Ukrainian farmers are ready to ship onions for no less than 4–9 UAH/kg, which is on average 40% more expensive than at the end of last week,” the report states.

As experts explain, despite the price increase, demand for this product remains quite high amid limited supply, especially of high-quality onions, analysts note.

What will happen to prices

Most farms have already sold out their entire inventory, and those market operators who have certain stocks of high-quality produce are counting on further price increases in this segment.

“Despite the current price increase, onions in Ukraine are still, on average, 68% cheaper than during the same period last year,” analysts note.

According to market participants, positive price trends in this segment will continue until the new crop of onions from local farms hits the market in large quantities.

Currently, according to the Ministry of Finance website, the average price of onions is 11 UAH per kg.

  • At Auchan—8.50 UAH per kg
  • Megamarket: 16 UAH per kg
  • Novus: 8.49 UAH per kg .

The average monthly prices in stores in March 2026 were 8.33 UAH per kg.

As a reminder, in the second half of March, Ukraine saw another wave of falling wholesale prices for onions.

This situation was attributed to the fact that with the onset of warm weather, farms began actively selling off onions from storage, as product quality deteriorates rapidly. At the same time, trading activity in the segment remains quite low, which also puts downward pressure on prices. According to analysts’ estimates, onions in Ukraine are currently being sold at an average price 49% lower than during the same period last year.
