The number of asylum seekers in Germany during the first six months of 2026 fell significantly compared to the same period last year. "Komersant Ukrainian" reports this, citing data from the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and referencing DW.
According to the ministry, 39,646 people applied for refugee status in Germany for the first time in the first half of 2026. In the first six months of last year, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) received 61,336 such applications. During the same period in 2024, the country’s authorities received approximately 121,000 such requests.
Asylum seekers came mainly from Afghanistan, Syria, Turkey, and Somalia.
The EU has allowed the deportation of refugees to third countries
In mid-June 2026, new asylum rules came into effect in the EU. They introduce mandatory screening of grounds for granting asylum at the EU’s external borders and a faster system for deporting individuals who are not entitled to international protection.
In recent months, EU member states have also agreed on additional, stricter rules for asylum seekers. In particular, these rules provide for the possibility of deporting migrants and refugees to third countries.
