What is known about the nighttime attack

On the night of May 1, Russia launched another drone strike on Ukraine’s port infrastructure. Facilities in the Danube and Greater Odessa regions were targeted.

According to the USPA, the following was recorded following the strikes:

  • damage to berths;
  • damage to warehouses;
  • localized fires;
  • port services and rescue workers responding at the sites of the strikes.

The fires were quickly extinguished by port workers and rescue services. According to preliminary data, there were no casualties.

Russian forces also attacked port infrastructure in the Izmail district of the Odesa region, according to the Izmail Regional State Administration,

“The enemy carried out an airstrike on the port infrastructure of the Izmail district,” the statement said.

No one was injured. The fires were extinguished by rescue workers.

Are the ports operating after the attack?

Despite the damage, Ukrainian ports continue to operate. The USPA emphasized that port infrastructure is functioning with additional security measures in place.

This is important because the ports of Greater Odesa and the Danube route remain key for Ukrainian exports, particularly agricultural products, metals, and other cargo.

Why is Russia attacking the ports of Odesa and the Danube

The ports of Odesa and the Danube are of strategic importance to Ukraine. A significant portion of exports passes through them, and routes connected to the Ukrainian Maritime Corridor and Danube logistics operate there.

Russia regularly attacks the port infrastructure of the Odesa region, attempting to disrupt Ukrainian exports, create risks for civilian shipping, and increase pressure on the economy.

The Odesa region, home to seaports and river ports on the Danube, has repeatedly been targeted by Russian strikes during the full-scale war.

This is not the first Russian attack on the port infrastructure of the Odesa region in recent days. On the night of April 26, Russian troops attacked the Odesa region with strike drones. As reported by “Kommersant Ukrainian, civilian and port infrastructure, as well as a ship, were damaged.

As early as April 22, Russian occupation forces struck Ukraine’s strategic transport infrastructure: the Zaporizhzhia-Liva railway yard and Odesa’s port infrastructure came under attack.

In Odesa, fires broke out after drone strikes, damaging piers, warehouses, railway infrastructure, and port operators’ facilities.

Also, on the night of April 25, Russian drones attacked port infrastructure in the Odesa region and a civilian vessel flying the Panamanian flag. A fire broke out on board, which the crew extinguished on their own; there were no casualties or injuries.

According to the industry publication USM, citing Mykola Kravchuk, head of the State Enterprise “USPA,” since the beginning of 2026, the Russians have attacked more than 20 civilian vessels and damaged over 170 port infrastructure facilities in Ukraine.

These strikes pose risks not only to the Ukrainian economy but also to international shipping and food security, as Ukrainian ports remain vital to the global grain and agricultural products market.
