Ukraine will receive 16 new modern aircraft: the United Kingdom and Sweden will provide the funding

16 July 17:41

The United Kingdom and Sweden are allocating 300 million pounds to purchase modern aircraft for Ukraine, which will help protect Ukrainian airspace from Russian attacks. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced this during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to the prime minister, the UK is providing this assistance in cooperation with Sweden.

“I am pleased to announce that today we are going even further, as I can announce that the United Kingdom, together with Sweden, will provide 300 million pounds in support for the delivery of 16 new, modern aircraft that will help defend Ukraine’s airspace,” he emphasized.

At the same time, the British prime minister did not specify exactly which aircraft would be supplied.

He also added that the arrival of a new prime minister will not change the UK’s position on Ukraine.

“The point is to clearly understand who the aggressor is here. And the fact that the UK will have a new prime minister in the coming days does not change this dynamic in the slightest,” Starmer emphasized.

Gripen Purchase Agreement

As a reminder, on June 30, 2026, Ukraine and Sweden signed an agreement for the purchase of 16 Gripen E fighter jets. Along with the aircraft, Ukraine will purchase a package of equipment, maintenance, and support services. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov clarified at the time that the fighter jets are being purchased with funds from a Eurocredit loan and with support from the United Kingdom.

On Thursday, July 16, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Kyiv on an official visit. This is his final trip to Ukraine as head of the British government before he officially steps down, which is scheduled for next Monday.
