Tomato prices continue to fall in Ukraine

22 August 19:08

This week, the downward trend in greenhouse tomato prices resumed in Ukraine, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

In most regions of the country, weather conditions favored active harvesting of field-grown vegetables. This factor increased pressure on the market, as the supply of tomatoes continued to exceed demand.

Toward the end of the week, prices for high-quality tomatoes fell to 25–50 UAH/kg ($0.56–1.12/kg), which is on average 17% cheaper than at the end of the previous workweek. Both producers and wholesale companies attribute the difficulty in selling the desired volumes to the unsatisfactory quality of the tomatoes. The plants are suffering from drought and heat, and the fruits are damaged by sunburn; cracks often appear on them, which generally reduces the marketability of the produce.

It should be noted that, despite the sharp drop in prices for greenhouse tomatoes, this product is currently being sold on the Ukrainian market at an average price 15% higher than a year ago. Ukrainian producers attribute this situation to a reduction in the production of these vegetables during the current season.
