From an assault to a serious charge: A ninth-grader from Kyiv faces charges for attempting to murder a teacher and a student

In Kyiv, law enforcement officials have opened a criminal investigation under the charge of “attempted murder of two or more persons” following an attack at a school in the Obolon district. This is according to a statement from the Kyiv police and prosecutor’s office.
According to the investigation, a 14-year-old ninth-grade student attacked a 39-year-old history teacher and a classmate with a knife in the morning.
Investigators determined that prior to the attack, the teenager:
- entered the school restroom;
- put on a mask and helmet he had prepared in advance;
- then ran into the classroom and stabbed them.
After the attack, the student left the classroom, locked himself in the restroom again, and inflicted knife wounds on himself.
What is known about the condition of the victims
All three— the teacher, the student, and the attacker himself —have been hospitalized.
- The teacher is in serious condition.
- The student and the attacker have been diagnosed with stab and cut wounds.
- Doctors are determining the final severity of the injuries.
After receiving medical care, the minor suspect is expected to be detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators from the Obolon Police Department of Kyiv under the procedural supervision of the prosecutor’s office.
A separate line of investigation focuses on the possible involvement of Russian special services.
During an examination of the teenager’s cell phone, law enforcement officers discovered correspondence with unknown individuals who, according to preliminary data, may be linked to the Russian Federation. The correspondence likely discussed plans to carry out an attack.
The motives behind the student’s actions are currently being determined.

News of the incident at the Kyiv school broke this morning. According to the National Police, a teacher and a student were injured and immediately received medical attention. Later, the media released a photo of the teenager who carried out the attack.
The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officials do not rule out that the case could take on a broader security context if the theory of external influence is confirmed.
