Power outages lasting up to 8 hours may return to Ukraine due to the heat: expert forecast

4 June 18:53

At certain times during the summer, Ukrainians may face power outages lasting up to eight hours a day.

This forecast was announced by Oleg Popenko, head of the Utility Consumers Union, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to him, several factors will simultaneously affect the power grid, including high air temperatures, the condition of generating capacity, and the ability to import electricity. Popenko cites the heat as one of the main causes of the potential shortage.

“Outdoor temperatures of 30 degrees, especially 35, will affect electricity consumption not only in households but also in large shopping centers and industrial facilities,” the expert explained.

In addition, the availability of operational generation capacity and fuel supplies to power plants remains a key factor.

“This will be influenced by the availability of operational power generation, repaired CHP plants and thermal power plants, and the availability of gas. And we know that we have huge problems with gas,” he noted.

Popenko emphasized that the final scale of possible blackouts will depend on a combination of factors, but the risk of an electricity shortage this summer remains very high.
