For the first time in history: In China, the share of coal-fired power generation in total electricity production has fallen below 50%

In China, the world’s largest consumer of coal, less than half of electricity generation came from this fossil fuel for the first time in history during the first half of the year, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Reuters.

The country has been actively developing renewable energy for some time now. Coal’s share of China’s electricity generation in January–June stood at 49.7%, said Xin Yiteng, deputy director of the Development and Planning Department of the National Energy Administration of the People’s Republic of China, at a press conference on Thursday.

The share of renewable energy sources rose to 41.2%, exceeding the 40% mark for the first time, with wind and solar power accounting for 24.6% of that total, Xin added.

Natural gas and nuclear power accounted for the remainder of the energy mix.

Despite the decline in coal’s share of the energy mix, analysts believe that China may consume more coal this year than last, as demand for electricity is growing rapidly: more and more Chinese are switching to electric vehicles, data centers for AI are being actively built, and exports continue to increase. ‌

At the same time, the country’s government has set ‌2030 as the deadline for coal consumption to peak.
