14 May 09:36
On Thursday, May 14,Chinese President Xi Jinping held a ceremonial welcome for U.S. President Donald Trump, who had arrived in Beijing. The White House leader was greeted in the Chinese capital with military honors, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.
Trump and Xi shook hands in front of television cameras at the Great Hall of the People—the grand building housing the Chinese parliament on Tiananmen Square.
The U.S. president said, “It is a great honor for me to be your friend, and relations between China and the U.S. will be better than ever before.”
According to Trump, the two countries have a “fantastic shared future.” Xi, in turn, said he was pleased with the U.S. president’s visit at a time when “the world has reached a new crossroads.” The Chinese leader expressed confidence that both nations should be “partners, not rivals,” as this is not only beneficial to both sides but also “a boon for the whole world.”

Also present were representatives of the U.S. government and American business who traveled to Beijing with Trump. Rubio: We hope China will help unblock the Strait of Hormuz
One of the key topics of the Trump-Xi talks is expected to be the U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran. According to the U.S. Secretary of State, Washington is counting on China’s help in lifting the Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio noted that Beijing is also interested in unblocking this strategically important waterway, as Chinese ships are among those stranded there. Furthermore, China’s export-oriented economy is suffering from the global repercussions of the energy crisis, which is reducing demand for Chinese goods.
The leaders of the U.S. and China are also likely to focus on the situation surrounding Taiwan and U.S.-China trade relations. In October 2025, Trump and Xi, at a meeting in South Korea, had already agreed to “remove barriers” to Chinese exports of rare earth metals and reduce tariffs imposed by Washington due to the fentanyl crisis. It is expected that the resolution of trade disputes will continue.
Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing will last two days. The last time a U.S. president visited China was in 2017—that was also Trump during his first presidential term.
