FIFA has abandoned its plans to sell the rights to the World Cup

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has abandoned plans to sell a portion of the rights to the World Cup to private investors amid sharp criticism and the threat of a boycott from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). This was announced on Saturday, August 1, by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.

“After carefully listening to all points of view, we realized that this project had led to disagreements which—regardless of the level of support—no longer aligned with the original objective. Our goal has always been—and will always be—to unite and develop the sport,” said Gianni Infantino.

He added that FIFA’s goal is to unite and develop soccer, so “work on this proposal will not continue.” He also announced his intention to hold a meeting with all stakeholders in the near future, guided by “a shared interest in our sport and a commitment to the further development of soccer everywhere.”

Infantino’s Plan to Sell a Portion of World Cup Rights

It was previously reported that Gianni Infantino intends to sell stakes in the World Cup and other tournaments to private investors, including—as previously reported by the media—relatives of Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Infantino claims that this will bring football associations four times more revenue. He has set a deadline of September 19 for national associations to approve this plan.

On July 30, all 55 UEFA member associations decided to boycott all FIFA tournaments if Infantino carries out his plan.

“No one has the moral right to sell what is entrusted to them solely for safekeeping on behalf of future generations,” UEFA stated.

CONCACAF—the confederation responsible for the development of soccer in North and Central America and the Caribbean (comprising 41 soccer federations)—has also joined the European criticism.
