The Cabinet of Ministers has amended the rules governing the use of peatland: what is known

8 May 16:25

On May 6, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a new resolution outlining the specific rules for the use of land plots containing peatlands.

This was reported by the Ministry of Economy, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The resolution provides for the creation of a separate information layer based on the State Land Cadastre’s cartographic data, which will contain information about such plots.

This new cartographic layer will be mandatory for land managers to consider when making decisions regarding:

  • transferring land into ownership or use;
  • changes in their designated use;
  • the management of plots that are wholly or partially occupied by peatlands.

The resolution specifies the possible types of designated use for lands with peatlands and the composition of land categories to which such territories may belong. However, the document does not require an automatic review of the already established designated use of land plots or the re-registration of documents by owners or users.

Application of the New Rules

The new rules will apply to future decisions regarding the formation of land parcels or changes to their designated use.

“This innovation will help better manage these important ecosystems,” the Ministry of Economy noted.

In addition, the resolution separately regulates the transfer of land plots into ownership or use by former owners of real estate that was destroyed as a result of the Russian Federation’s armed aggression.

Peatlands play a vital role in maintaining the climate and water balance.

In their natural state, they store carbon, regulate water flow, and act as natural filters.
