There was no ceasefire on the front lines: Zelenskyy reported shelling and assaults
8 May 10:53
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia has not even made a token attempt to cease fire on the front lines. According to him, despite declarations of a “ceasefire,” the Russian army has continued shelling, assault operations, and the massive use of drones against Ukrainian positions and frontline communities. He made this statement on Facebook, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to Zelenskyy, as of 7 a.m., more than 140 shelling incidents targeting frontline positions had already been recorded, as well as 10 assaults, with the highest number occurring in the Sloviansk direction.
What Zelenskyy said about the “ceasefire”
The president emphasized that the Russian side has not actually ceased hostilities.
“There has not even been a token attempt by the Russian side to cease fire on the front lines. As was the case yesterday, Ukraine will respond in kind today. We will defend our positions and the lives of our people,” Zelenskyy stated.
According to the president, Ukraine will continue to respond to the actions of Russian troops in kind and defend its positions.
How many shellings and attacks were recorded
Zelenskyy cited data which, he said, indicates that there has been no real ceasefire on Russia’s part.
Overnight, the Russian army:
- carried out more than 140 shelling attacks on Ukrainian positions;
- carried out 10 assault operations;
- was most active in the Sloviansk direction;
- carried out over 850 strikes using various types of drones;
- continued to deploy reconnaissance drones over frontline communities.
Among the drones, according to reports, were also strike drones.

Ukraine will respond in kind
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine will not leave attacks unanswered. According to him, Ukrainian forces will continue to hold their positions and protect civilians.
The president also stated that a genuine movement toward peace will only be visible when Russia actually begins to end the war.
“Russia must end its war, and everyone will truly notice this when the movement toward peace begins,” the head of state noted.
What led up to this
The day before, Zelenskyy reported that the Russian side had violated the ceasefire that Ukraine had declared starting May 6. The initiated “quiet period” was supposed to begin on the night of May 5–6, but, according to the Ukrainian side, Russian troops continued their attacks.
New data on shelling, assaults, and drone strikes, according to the president, confirm that Russia’s statements about a ceasefire were not actually implemented on the front lines.
