Zelenskyy launches procedure for selecting judges to the Constitutional Court

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has approved the composition of the commission that will conduct a competitive selection of candidates for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court under the presidential quota. The relevant decree on the establishment of the commission was signed by the head of state on 29 February and immediately entered into force.
In order to ensure a competitive selection of candidates for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine in relation to persons appointed by the President of Ukraine, Zelenskyy decided to
- to approve the regulations on the competitive selection of candidates for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine in respect of persons appointed by the President of Ukraine;
- to establish a competition commission to conduct a competitive selection of candidates for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine in respect of persons appointed by the President of Ukraine and to approve its personal composition;
- the competition commission shall ensure competitive selection of candidates for the position of a CCU judge in respect of persons appointed by the President.
The commission consists of five members. Three of them are representatives of Ukrainian law schools:
- yaroslav Lazur, Dean of the Law Faculty of Uzhhorod National University,
- olha Lotiuk, Head of the Department of Constitutional Law at the Institute of Law of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv,
- tetiana Slinko, Head of the Department of Constitutional Law of Ukraine at Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University.
Another member of the commission is Oleksandr Skrypnyuk, Director of the Institute of State and Law of the National Academy of Sciences, Academician of the National Academy of Legal Sciences. And the only representative of the Western school of law is Bogdan Futey, a judge of the United States Court of Federal Claims.
According to the Constitution, the presidential quota includes the election of one-third of the Constitutional Court – that is, six judges.
