U.S. to Step Down from Leading the Aid Group for Ukraine — Media Reports

The Pentagon will step down from leading the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U, SAG-U), which was established under NATO auspices in Germany, Politico reported, citing informed sources, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to their information, command of the coordination group, which is responsible for supplying weapons and training Ukrainian military personnel, will be transferred to another member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
The appointment of an officer from Europe or Canada to the post of commander will be further confirmation that the allies are increasingly taking on responsibility, noted a NATO official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The SAG-U group, based in Wiesbaden, has been coordinating the delivery of military equipment to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, as well as providing training and logistical support to Ukrainian troops.
The leadership transition will take up to a year
The process of changing SAG-U leadership will take up to a year, sources told Politico. They emphasized, however, that support for Kyiv will not be interrupted. U.S. European Command will remain involved through an American deputy.
“Support for Ukraine remains one of the top priorities,” a NATO official noted.
NATO allies generally support the transfer of command. Some note that expanding Europe’s role seems appropriate.
“For us, this step has more advantages than disadvantages. It reduces the risks that could arise due to political instability in the United States and facilitates military logistics for Ukraine,” a Ukrainian official told the publication.
At the same time, he added, Washington’s decision to step down from leading the coordination group is causing concern in Kyiv regarding potential military support for Ukraine from the West.
