Trump and the Kremlin have responded to Zelenskyy’s letter to Putin

5 June 02:33

U.S. President Donald Trump responded to an open letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, in which the Ukrainian leader proposed a face-to-face meeting to discuss ending the war. Speaking to reporters, Trump said that such a meeting would be “wonderful” and that both leaders “should do it,” according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Commenting on Zelenskyy’s initiative for face-to-face talks with Putin, Trump told reporters that he supports the idea.

He said:

“I think it would be great if they met. They should do it. Get it done.”

This statement came after Zelenskyy, in an open letter, proposed to Putin that they meet on neutral ground — in Switzerland, Turkey, or one of the Arab countries — to discuss ending the war, a complete ceasefire during the talks, and a prisoner exchange on an “all for all” basis.

Trump again mentioned U.S. aid to Ukraine

During a conversation with the press, Trump returned to the topic of American aid to Kyiv. According to him, Ukraine would not have been able to hold out even a few days without the equipment provided by the United States and without the efforts of the American military.

He added that, in his opinion, America had “done a lot” for this meeting and called Zelenskyy and Putin “very good people.”

These remarks are in line with Trump’s longstanding position, in which he regularly emphasizes the U.S. role in supporting Ukraine while simultaneously promoting the idea of personal agreements between leaders as a path to ending the war.

How the Kremlin reacted to Zelenskyy’s letter

The Kremlin confirmed receipt of Zelenskyy’s letter and stated that Putin would be briefed on its contents.

“Yes, we saw it. He published it during the president’s event. The president has not yet had the opportunity to review it. I had the opportunity to review it. This will be communicated to the president after the working visit of the President of Uzbekistan concludes,” said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov also said that Zelenskyy could come to Moscow “at any moment” if he wants to talk.

Meanwhile, on the same day , Putin stated that he is ready for a peaceful settlement only on the condition that Ukraine makes compromises, and once again reiterated Russia’s demands regarding Donbas.
