Power outages have occurred in eight regions of Ukraine following shelling by Russia

15 May 10:32

As of May 15, some consumers in eight regions of Ukraine remain temporarily without power due to hostilities and the aftermath of Russian shelling. Energy companies are working around the clock to restore power to all customers as quickly as possible. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

At the same time, no general restrictions on electricity consumption are currently expected.

Ukrenergo also noted that no consumption restrictions are planned for May 15, but Ukrainians are asked to use electricity sparingly in the evening hours.

Where there is no power on May 15

According to the Ministry of Energy, due to hostilities and shelling, some consumers remain without power in eight regions of Ukraine.

These include:

  • Odesa region;
  • Dnipropetrovsk region;
  • Donetsk region;
  • Zaporizhzhia region;
  • Sumy Oblast;
  • Khmelnytskyi Oblast;
  • Kharkiv Oblast;
  • Chernihiv region.

Emergency repair work is ongoing in these regions. Power utility workers are working around the clock, but the pace of restoration depends on the security situation and the extent of the damage.

Will there be power outage schedules on May 15?

The Ministry of Energy noted that no restrictions are expected on May 15. In other words, this does not refer to scheduled power outages, but to emergency power cuts caused by shelling, combat operations, or damage to the grid.

Ukrenergo also reported that no general electricity consumption restrictions are planned for Friday, May 15.

At the same time, in case of changes, consumers are advised to monitor announcements from the official resources of their regional power distribution companies.

Ukrainians are asked to conserve electricity

Despite the absence of projected restrictions, energy officials are urging Ukrainians to use electricity sparingly during peak hours.

It is especially important not to turn on several high-power electrical appliances at the same time between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. It is during this period that the load on the power grid traditionally increases.

Ukrenergo also advises, if possible, to shift the use of energy-intensive appliances to daytime hours—from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.—when the load on the system is lower.

Why power outages occur

The main cause of the current outages is damage to the power infrastructure resulting from Russian strikes and military operations. In frontline and border regions, the grid regularly sustains new damage, so repairs can be complicated by repeated attacks.

In addition, emergency outages may occur locally due to damage to power lines, transformer substations, or other equipment.

What consumers should do

Residents of regions experiencing power outages should check the official websites of their regional power companies. That is where up-to-date information on emergency repairs, estimated restoration times, and possible changes in power supply is published.

It is also advisable to charge phones and power banks, keep a supply of water on hand, and avoid overloading the grid after power is restored by suddenly turning on high-power appliances all at once.
