The United Kingdom will have a new prime minister as early as July 20: who will it be?

18 July 11:17

Former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham was announced as the new leader of the Labour Party on Friday, July 17. His candidacy was supported by an overwhelming majority of Labour MPs in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament—379 out of 403. This means that on July 20, Burnham will become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, succeeding Keir Starmer —once King Charles III formally approves the appointment. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.

“People and local communities have waited far too long for politicians to let them find hope again… We will restore that hope to them,” the newly elected leader promised at a special party convention.

Burnam stated that the last four decades, beginning in the 1980s, “have not been favorable either for the communities that were at the founding of the Labor Party or for communities across the United Kingdom in rural and coastal areas.”

“That is why today we are making a promise to them to do better,” the publication quoted him as saying. “If we want the economy and the country to work for the benefit of all people and local communities, then we need a new path, different from the one we’ve been following for the past 40 years.”

Burnam secured his victory in the race for the Labour Party leadership on the evening of July 13, having secured the support of the required number of Labour MPs.

“The King of the North” and a Moderate Socialist

Andy Burnham was elected mayor of Greater Manchester three times in a row, earning him the nickname “King of the North.” His achievements include expanding public transportation while keeping fares affordable. Burnam’s other priorities are housing and healthcare.

In late June, Burnham became a member of the House of Commons to qualify for the leadership of the Labour Party and the position of prime minister. In a by-election in the northern English constituency of Makerfield, he decisively defeated the candidate from the right-wing populist Reform UK party, which has recently gained popularity in Britain.

In a recent BBC interview, Burnham described his political views as follows: “an advocate of economics-focused socialism.”

He has criticized “Brexit,” and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he called on then-Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson to provide more support for those affected by lockdowns. Burnham criticized his fellow party member Starmer for cutting social benefits.
