The United Kingdom is preparing to join the EU loan for Ukraine

4 May 09:21

The United Kingdom plans to join the European Union’s €90 billion loan program for Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“The UK government is expected to announce its intention to begin negotiations with the EU on this issue as early as Monday at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan,” the report states.

The EU loan program, covering 2026–2027, was approved in April after Hungary lifted its veto. The UK’s participation will allow for expanded financial support for Ukraine and ensure the delivery of “vital military equipment,” Starmer said. It will also create opportunities for the British defense industry by giving companies access to contracts to supply military equipment to Kyiv.

Starmer: “Everyone wins” from cooperation between London and Brussels

According to the British prime minister, “everyone wins” from the joint efforts of London and Brussels.

“In uncertain times, we need to move forward and faster on defense issues to ensure people’s safety,” emphasized Keir Starmer.

The UK, which has imposed sweeping restrictive measures against Russia since the start of the war in 2022, will also announce “later this week” the introduction of another package of “tough sanctions” against Russian companies aimed at disrupting military supply chains, the office said in a statement.

What else is known about the EU loan for Ukraine

Although the EU has agreed to a 90-billion-euro loan, it is considering the possibility of imposing stricter conditions. For example, it may make part of the payments contingent on the implementation of unpopular tax changes for businesses.

Meanwhile, the first 6 billion from the loan will arrive in Ukraine this quarter.

At the same time , First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal clarified that these loan funds will not be directed toward restoring energy infrastructure that was destroyed as a result of Russian shelling.
