Londoners to donate scrapped cars to Ukraine

13 March 2024 15:15

Starting from 15 March, Londoners will be able to send their cars to be scrapped to support humanitarian and medical needs in Ukraine. This was announced by the press service of the London Mayor’s Office, Kommersant Ukrainian reports https://www.komersant.info/

Most of London today is covered by the ULEZ zone – Ultra Low Emission Zone or Ultra Low Emission Zone. Cars in this zone are subject to stricter environmental standards. To help Londoners switch to cars with improved environmental performance, the London Mayor’s Office has introduced a special scrappage scheme that reimburses car owners for part of the cost of their cars.

As part of the new initiative, Londoners can hand in their cars not for scrapping, but for shipment to Ukraine, where they can be used in various humanitarian missions. This measure is financially supported by the London administration and endorsed by the British government.

“At the end of January, Transport Secretary Mark Harper confirmed that the government sees no legal obstacles to sending ineligible vehicles to Ukraine, as long as the same level of grant is maintained,”

– the London mayor’s office said in a statement.

British-Ukrainian Aid (BUA), a charity registered in the UK, has been chosen as an intermediary to implement the new scheme.

The London Ambulance Service is planning to join the campaign, which will send 50 decommissioned ambulances to Ukraine.

“As the devastating consequences of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine continue, the country’s infrastructure has been severely damaged. I have been working quickly to amend our scrappage scheme so that from next week, ineligible vehicles can be donated to Ukraine, helping to meet medical and humanitarian needs as well as removing old, polluting vehicles from London’s roads. There is still a lot of money in the scrappage fund and I urge everyone who applies to donate their car to this cause.”

– commented the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
