Metinvest, Ukraine’s largest steelmaker, has suspended operations at Pokrovske Coal Group due to changes in the situation on the frontline, electricity shortages and a deteriorating security situation. This is stated in the company’s press release, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
The Group is currently assessing the full impact of the suspension of the asset, whose production sites remain in the government-controlled territory of Ukraine.
“The safety of employees is a priority for Metinvest, so the company facilitated the evacuation of Pokrovskoye Coal Group employees and their families. All employees who are not involved in the suspension of work are offered paid retraining and employment at Metinvest’s assets in Zaporizhzhia, Kamianske and Kryvyi Rih,” the statement said.
Metinvest said that the evacuated employees are provided with financial assistance (lifting allowances, compensation for rent), free accommodation in dormitories, and assistance for children (placement in kindergartens and schools).

It is noted that due to the suspension of Pokrovske Coal Group’s operations, Metinvest’s management has developed a contingency plan to ensure the supply of the necessary raw materials (coal and coke) for steel production at the Group’s metallurgical assets (Kametstal and the Zaporizhstal joint venture).
The measures include replacing Ukrainian raw materials with coking coal from the United States-based United Coal Company (part of Metinvest Group), utilizing the increased coal reserves, and securing additional coal and coke supplies from third-party suppliers.
“Pokrovske Coal Group is the energy heart of the Ukrainian steel industry and used to provide a large part of export revenues to the Ukrainian budget. However, with the situation deteriorating every day, we cannot risk the safety of our thousands of employees, as well as the lives of their families and children. Therefore, the suspension of the company’s operations is a necessary step that will help save lives. We believe in the victory of Ukraine, we believe in the Ukrainian Armed Forces and we are ready to resume the work of Pokrovske Coal Group and Pokrovsk itself after repelling the Russian invasion,” said Yuriy Ryzhenkov, CEO of the Group.
The government has approved the relocation of the Pokrovsk District Military Administration to the village of Dobropillya in the Kryvyi Rih village community of Pokrovsk district, Donetsk region.
The distance from Dobropillia to Pokrovsk is about 23 kilometers.
Earlier, the Pokrovsk city military administration reminded residents that the evacuation of civilians in the Pokrovsk community is ongoing.
