Ukraine significantly increased gas and electricity imports in February

4 March 2025 11:49

In February 2025, Ukraine imported 511.8 million cubic meters of natural gas, which is the highest monthly volume in 1.5 years, since September 2023. This is reported by the specialized publication ExPro, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs.

It is noted that compared to January 2025, gas imports in February increased 12 times.

Where did Ukraine import gas from?

Most of the gas was imported from Slovakia – 234.4 million cubic meters or 45.8% of all imports. In addition, 218 million cubic meters (42.6%) were imported from Hungary, and 59.5 million cubic meters (11.6%) from Poland.

Most of the natural gas was imported to the “customs warehouse” of the Ukrainian UGS facilities – 401 million cubic meters. In addition, 110.8 million cubic meters were imported directly into the Ukrainian gas transmission system.

Why Ukraine increased gas imports

According to ExPro, the significant increase in natural gas imports in February is due to a number of factors, the main one being the reduction in Ukrainian production after Russian attacks at the beginning of the month. Russia repeatedly attacked gas production facilities during the month.

In addition, cold weather persisted in Ukraine in February, which resulted in higher demand for natural gas. Amid declining gas reserves in storage facilities, Ukraine needed to import natural gas to cover its needs. The main importer of gas was Naftogaz Group, as well as private companies that imported gas for Ukrtransgaz.

What to expect in the future

In March, imports may be lower than in February. In early March, Ukraine is expected to experience gradual warming, which will lead to a reduction in natural gas consumption. In addition, Ukraine is gradually restoring gas production facilities after Russian attacks.

ExPro emphasizes that in preparation for the next heating season, Ukraine needs to significantly increase the volume of natural gas imports.

As you know, the European Commission has announced financial support for gas purchases for Ukraine through the Ukraine Facility, which will restore reserves and ensure reliable supplies, contributing to the energy security of both Ukraine and the region. According to DiXi Group, the move is part of a new support package that also includes the integration of Ukraine’s electricity market into the EU by spring 2027 and accelerated investment in renewable energy.

Ukraine has also increased electricity imports

In February 2025, Ukraine’s electricity imports jumped by almost 30% compared to January, to 244 thousand MWh. This is evidenced by ExPro Electricity monitoring data.

Most of the electricity was imported from Hungary – 35% of the total volume, and from Slovakia – 30%. The least amount of electricity was supplied from Moldova (part of the volume may have been re-imported from Romania). During the month, imports from Hungary increased by 77%. Compared to February 2024, electricity imports increased by 2.9 times.
