When will Hungary return the money and gold to Oschadbank? Madyar’s response
21 April 09:37
Péter Magyar, leader of the Hungarian party “Tisza” and winner of Hungary’s parliamentary elections, stated that he will discuss the issue of returning the gold and funds of “Oschadbank” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy only after he officially becomes prime minister.
This was reported by Telex, as cited by "Komersant Ukrainian".
Commenting on accusations against Viktor Orbán’s government regarding the theft of Oschadbank’s funds and gold, Magyar spoke cautiously and stated that he is not ready to rely solely on public media noise.
According to him, he currently sees mostly “propaganda news” and does not consider it possible to draw final conclusions without a full understanding of the circumstances of the case.
The future head of the Hungarian government added that after taking office, he will have more important topics to discuss with Zelenskyy, but he will not ignore the issue of Oschadbank’s assets.
Mátyás will officially head Hungary’s new government on May 9.
Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would like to recover the Oschadbank funds that were frozen in Hungary and plans to discuss this issue with Mályi.
Zelenskyy noted that Viktor Orbán, the current prime minister who will soon resign following his defeat in the parliamentary elections, simply stole this money.
Theft of Oschadbank’s money and valuables
Oschadbank reported that two of the financial institution’s armored vehicles, along with valuables, were detained in Hungary, and that its employees were abducted.
According to the bank, the incident occurred on March 5 during a routine transport of foreign currency and bank metals between Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank and Oschadbank of Ukraine.
The cargo was cleared in accordance with European customs procedures, and the bank holds a valid license for international transport. Such cash-in-transit vehicle trips take place weekly, which is standard practice under wartime conditions.
After the release of Oschadbank employees, funds and valuables totaling $40 million, €35 million, and 9 kilograms of bank gold remain detained in Hungary. The total value of these assets is $82.2 million.
Oschadbank has also recovered the armored vehicles and some of the belongings of seven of its employees who were previously detained in Hungary. Damage to the equipment has been documented, and an assessment of the losses is currently underway.
