The world’s largest power semiconductor plant, operated by Infineon, has opened in Dresden, with the aim of strengthening the technological independence of Germany and Europe. This was reported by the German federal government, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing “Ukrinform.”
“German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon has opened the world’s largest factory for the production of smart power semiconductors in Dresden. In the future, this ‘smart’ factory (Smart Power Fab) will produce state-of-the-art semiconductors for future technologies, including power supply for artificial intelligence data centers, renewable energy, power grids, and autonomous vehicles,” the statement reads.
Construction of the plant, which began in 2023, was completed in just three years—faster than planned. The total investment amounted to 5 billion euros, marking the largest single investment in Infineon’s history. Of this amount, approximately 920 million euros consists of government funding provided under the European Chips Act.
The facility will create about 1,000 highly skilled jobs.
The federal government emphasized that Germany is the European leader in semiconductor manufacturing, and through the Hightech Agenda Deutschland program and the national strategy for the development of microelectronics, the government is strengthening its support for research, workforce training, and industrial production in this strategic sector.
It is noted that the German Silicon Saxony cluster has remained Europe’s largest microelectronics hub for many years: one in every three microchips on the continent is produced there.
